Step-by-step TOEFL practice roadmap
Step 1: Learn the new task types
Try each test untimed first so you understand Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Listen and Choose a Response before the clock matters.
Step 2: Take a timed test
Use timed mode: recordings play once, and questions appear after each recording, as in the real test.
Step 3: Review by task type
The results screen lists your score by task type, weakest first. Spend your next sessions there.
Step 4: Retest and compare
Take the second test a week later and compare your rough band. Look for consistent results, not one high score.
The four sections of the new TOEFL iBT
The test takes about two hours. Reading and Listening are adaptive, and each section is scored on a 1–6 band scale. The overall score is the average of the four sections.

Frequently asked questions
What changed in the TOEFL iBT in January 2026?
ETS introduced new task types in every section, made Reading and Listening adaptive, shortened the test to about two hours, and moved to a 1–6 band scale (with a comparable 0–120 score reported during a transition period). The old integrated speaking and writing tasks were replaced.
What is Complete the Words?
A paragraph in which some words are missing their final letters. You type the missing letters. It tests vocabulary, spelling and how well you use context and grammar to work out each word.
How is the 1–6 band on this page calculated?
ETS does not publish a raw-score conversion for the new scale, so the band shown here is a rough guide based on the share of questions you answer correctly. Use it to track progress, not to predict an official score.
Are these official ETS questions?
No. These are original practice tests written in the 2026 format for self-assessment. Always check the current format and score requirements on the official ETS website before booking.
How are Writing and Speaking marked here?
Build a Sentence is marked automatically. Emails, discussion posts and spoken answers are not: after you submit, compare your work with a model answer and tick the self-check list. Spoken answers are recorded on your device so you can play them back; nothing is uploaded.
