    Show answer

    Model answer

    Dear Dr Chen,

I am writing about the midterm exam on October 18. Unfortunately, that is the same day as my sister's wedding, which is taking place in another city, and I need to travel there the day before.

I am very sorry for the inconvenience. Would it be possible for me to take the exam on a different day? I would be happy to take it earlier, for example on October 16 or 17, so there would be no chance of hearing about the questions from other students. I can also bring a copy of the wedding invitation if you need it.

Thank you for considering my request.

    Kind regards,

    Alex Morgan

You have about 10 minutes to write a response for an online class discussion.

  1. Q12.Your professor is teaching a class on urban studies. Write a post responding to the professor's question. In your response, express and support your opinion, and make a contribution to the discussion.

Professor Okafor: Many cities are considering banning cars from their downtown areas to reduce pollution and traffic. Is this a good idea? Explain your view.

Liam: I think it's a great idea. Without cars, the air would be cleaner, and streets would be much safer and more pleasant for walking and cycling.

Mei: I'm worried about the effects. Shops might lose customers who usually drive, and older or disabled people could find it much harder to reach the city centre.

    Model answer

I think banning cars from downtown areas is a good idea in principle, but I agree with Mei that it has to be done carefully. Liam makes a strong point about cleaner air, and streets without cars are much more pleasant for walking and outdoor cafés. However, a complete ban could make it hard for older or disabled people to reach shops and doctors. A better approach might be to ban private cars while still allowing buses, taxis and delivery vehicles at certain times. My city did something similar a few years ago, and after some initial complaints, local businesses actually reported more customers, because people enjoyed spending time in the area.
