A researcher is interviewing students about technology in daily life. Answer each question as soon as you hear it. You have 45 seconds for each answer.

  1. Q8.How much time do you spend on your phone each day, and what do you mostly use it for?

    Show answer

    Model answer

I probably spend about three hours a day on my phone. I mostly use it for messaging friends and family, checking my university email and listening to podcasts on the bus. I also use a language-learning app for about fifteen minutes every day. I'd like to cut down on social media, though, because it often takes more time than I realise.

  2. Q9.Do you think social media helps people stay connected, or does it make them feel more isolated?

    Show answer

    Model answer

I think it does both. It makes it easy to stay in touch with people who live far away; I talk to my cousins abroad almost every week. But when people only see others' highlights online, they can feel left out. So it helps when it supports real relationships, and hurts when it replaces them.

  3. Q10.What is one piece of technology you could not live without? Why?

    Show answer

    Model answer

I couldn't live without my laptop. I use it for almost everything related to my studies: writing essays, attending online classes and doing research. It also lets me work from anywhere, like the library or a café. If I lost it, I'd fall behind very quickly, which is why I always back up my files.

  4. Q11.Should schools limit students' use of phones during the day? Why or why not?

    Show answer

    Model answer

I think schools should limit phones during lessons, but not ban them completely. Phones are very distracting in class, and students learn better when they're focused. However, they're useful in emergencies and sometimes for learning activities, so students should be able to use them during breaks or when a teacher allows it.

Important note: These are original TOEFL-style practice questions for self-assessment. They are not official ETS materials. Speaking and writing improvement still benefits from mentor feedback, rubric-based review, or recorded response analysis.
